Porter stout

“What that indicates to me is that the color is derived from roasted barley, and that That "brown stout" simply meant "strong porter" is confirmed by a court case reported in The Times of London in 1803 over the theft of the contents of a cask of "porter, of superior quality, called Brown Stout" on its way from London to Barnsley, in Yorkshire. Porter is well-hopped, made from brown malt, and descends from brown beer. Historically, the strongest porter beer was called a stout porter, but this was later shortened to "stout." A rough way to differentiate the two is that porter typically does not use roasted barley, which adds to bitterness, while stout almost always does. Baltic porter is a version of imperial stout which originated in the Baltic region in the nineteenth century.
